Philosophy:
There are three basic tenants that guide the Greece Boys Soccer League:

First and foremost, our players should develop character, a sense of fair play and sportsmanship. Our coaches teach these vital traits through leadership and example.

Second, the skills, nuances and enjoyment of the game of soccer are taught and shared by the coaches, players and families.

Third... Keep it Fun For the Boys!

General Information:

GBSL is a recreational house league, which means that we only play teams within our own organization, and we do not travel to play teams in other organizations.

There are six age groups: 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15 and 16-18 Boys are assigned to age groups based on their birth date.  Boys CANNOT be moved to a different age group on account of skill, experience, size, transportation needs, or any other factor. Boys who are registered in the wrong age group will be moved to the correct age group before team rosters are determined.

There are no try-outs required for GBSL, and any boy who lives in the Town of Greece, New York, may join by filling out a registration form and paying the registration fee (provided we have enough teams available). Registration reminder post-cards are sent directly to boys who played in the the league during the previous year. The registration form is available on this web site.  You may also register online!

All of the members of the Executive Board of GBSL, and all of the Coaches, are VOLUNTEERS.  There are no paid employees in the League.

Team Creation Process:

The geographic distribution of players in each age group, and the availability of coaches, determine team rosters. In most cases, a boy will be assigned to a team and coach within his neighborhood.  However, there is NO guarantee that your boy will be on a  "neighborhood" team.

The head coach’s son(s) will always be assigned to the head coach's team, (provided they are in the same age group). Each head coach is allowed to designate one assistant coach. The son(s) of designated assistant coach will also be assigned to that head coach's team.

Brothers in the same age group will be placed on the same team.

A boy may ask to not play for a specific coach or coaches. All such requests are honored.

Any special requests to play for a specific coach, to play with friends, to play with car pool members, etc. will not be considered when rosters are determined. Be aware that it may appear that some special requests are honored. Any such occurrences are purely coincidence. Age group commissioners have no information on special requests when they prepare team rosters.

Late registrants (those received after the November walk-in registration) are placed on any open roster and may not be on a neighborhood team.

Player Responsibilities:
Soccer is a team sport and teamwork is essential to a good team. To build good team skills, the players should be active participants in all practices. A part-time practice participant will not learn the plays and the teamwork being taught. This is unfair to the player and his teammates.

Therefore, those players selected to a team are expected to participate in all practices and in all scheduled league games.

Be a TEAM player, don't try to be the "superstar".

Parent Responsibilities:
Parental participation is an important part of Greece Boys Soccer League's success. The following are examples of the types of participation that  all parents should be willing to commit to:

See that your child fulfills his responsibilities to the team.

Provide assistance in special events; share driving to and from practices and games.

Get your child to practices and games on time.

If your schedule allows, try to attend your child's practices.

Pick up your child after practices and games on time.

Make every effort to attend your child's games.   Encourage them with cheers and positive comments!

No negative comments from the sidelines!

Focus on the quality of the effort put forth during the game rather than the final score.  Remember, this is a learning league!

Provide assistance and coordination in bringing water, oranges, etc. to games, help and assist in the installation of nets for games.

Please don't coach from the sidelines.  Doing so undermines the teachings of the Coach, and serves only to distract the players.

Treat all officials with respect, and as guests of our League. Negative actions or remarks are inappropriate and encourage players to do the same. Teach by setting a good example!

Show respect for the coach of a team. Open criticism is in poor taste. Should a problem develop, adults are expected to find an appropriate time and place to advise the coach of their concern. The Greece Boys Soccer League provides many avenues of appeal, including coaches, commissioners, board members, and the Executive Board , by which any League player or parent can pursue an issue. Again, teach by setting a good example!

Always remember who this league is for... your kids!.

Coaches Responsibilities:
Coaches are the integral part of Greece Boys Soccer League's success. A Coaches influence can have a lasting effect on his/her players for many years.  Therefore it is important that all Coaches lead by being a good example. What follows are just a few examples of  what a Coach needs to do in order to help his/her players learn the game of soccer and build a better team:

NEVER be alone with a player that is not your own child! This is for Your Protection, as well as the players!  Always try to have another ADULT present at all GBSL activities.  Invite parents to attend your practices.  Never hold a "Closed" practice.

Never leave a player unattended after a practice or game.

Be supportive of every member of your team at all times.

Be prepared for all practices and games.  Plan out your practices in advance.  Make out your game roster well before the game, not at the game.

Communicate effectively with your players and their parents.  Simply put... "If they don't know what you want, how are you going to get it?"

Make every effort to maintain a regular practice schedule.  Your players, and their parents, need to know when and where the practice is going to be each week so that they too can plan their schedules.

Maintain adequate discipline at all practices and games.  If you allow your players to get out of hand, there is no way that you will be able to teach them the skills and techniques of soccer effectively.  Remember, keep it simple, keep it fun, but always keep control.

Provide players with a safe practice environment..

Focus on how your players played during the game, not the final score.

Adhere to the "No one plays four quarters before all have played three" rule (GBSL Rules, Sect. III, Item 4).  This rule is in effect to insure that every boy has equal playing time during games.  As Coach, you must always be fair and consistent, you cannot play favorites.

Treat all officials with respect, and as guests of our League. Negative actions or remarks are inappropriate and encourage players to do the same. Teach by setting a good example!

Show respect for the coach of the opposing team. Open criticism is in poor taste. Should a problem develop, Coaches are expected to find an appropriate time and place to address their concern. The Greece Boys Soccer League provides many avenues of appeal, including commissioners, board members, and the Executive Board.
