-GBSL Executive Board

Greece Boys Soccer League (GBSL) is going through a major re-organization.

After many years of dedicated service, Laurie Kastner, and Greg Bennett have decided to retire.  Laurie served as General Manager  and Greg served the dual roles of Vice-President and Registrar. It is with a great deal of sadness that GBSL says “good-bye and Thank-you” to Greg and Laurie.  Their presence, guidance, leadership and friendship will be missed. Additionally, Dave May decided to step down as the GBSL’s President.  Dave has graciously agreed to stay on in a transitional role of General Manager for the 2004 season.

The positions of President and Vice-President will be filled by Laurie Maneti and Paul Iorio respectively.  We thank Laurie and Paul for their decision to step up to the challenge of leading the Greece Boys Soccer League in to the future.  The Registrar position for the 2004 season will be filled by John Brand.  As a result of these internal moves, several positions on the Executive Board have opened up.

We are working diligently to resolve the issues of the past, while addressing the requirements of the present and future.  Unfortunately, this process is taking longer than we anticipated.  We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work our way through this difficult transition.

If you would like to help us make this program better than it ever has been, please let us know.

We need, and want your help!  Click here to become a GBSL Volunteer.

Together we will work to make the Greece Boys Soccer League better than it ever has been!

BallBullet.gif (305 bytes)  Our Website had been experiencing problems with data loss and data corruption.

When we first noticed data losses in mid to late June, we attributed it to the fact that we had two people possibly performing updates to the Website simultaneously.

However, when web pages continued to be modified/deleted when no authorized persons had performed any activity on the Website, we took appropriate action.

We have been monitoring the Website activity to verify that the situation has stabilized.

It is with a bit of embarrassment on the Webmaster's part that the most recent backup of the Website prior to the detection of the problem, was made just before the season started back in May.  As a direct result, when we restored the Website to the last known good back up, we lost quite a few updates!  We work on a live site, so as a result, without the backups...

We sincerely apologize for these problems.  We have modified our policies, and practices, accordingly.

GBSL is in the process of developing an entirely new and dynamic Website.  It will be unveiled in the October timeframe, just in time to handle the Online Registration for the 2004 season.  It's design will facilitate easy, and secure access to GBSL data, and information, relative to your Childs age group(s).

-Sincerely

Webmaster, GBSL

BallBullet.gif (305 bytes)    OPEN LETTER FROM GBSL EXECUTIVE BOARD:

To Players, Parents and Coaches of the Greece Boys Soccer League:

The GBSL Executive Board regrets to inform you that, due to the extremely wet weather we experienced in the beginning of this season, GBSL will NOT be holding any “Playoffs” or participating in any “SoccerFest” this year.

Instead, it was decided, that we would make every effort, to make up the games that were missed after Greece Central School District, and the Town, took many of our playing fields off-line due to the wet conditions.

We understand your disappointment.  We hope you understand that we had no control over those circumstances.

We are working to make sure that all regular season games get played.   We are doing the best that we can, with the very limited resources that we have available to us.

Parents, we encourage you to get involved with the GBSL Committee.  We need your help.  We are asking you for your help.

Several key positions will be open after this season.  We will need Age Group Commissioners, a Field Coordinator, Game Schedulers and a Volunteer Coordinator.

We cannot function without your support.

Be part of the solution!

Together we can make 2003 the best soccer season that our sons ever had!

Yours in Soccer,
       The GBSL Executive Board

BallBullet.gif (305 bytes)    OPEN LETTER TO PARENTS:

To Parents of Players in the Greece Boys Soccer League:

It has come to my attention that there have been incidents of inappropriate behavior of Parents and Spectators from the sidelines during GBSL games.

In one incident a Parent was over heard commenting about an opposing team's player that fell during play.   The comment was  "good, someone finally took him down".    Not that the comment itself wasn't bad enough, what REALLY upsets me is the fact that the teams are in the 7 - 8 Division!

To make matters even worse… the person who reported the incident is an official of our sister league, Greece Girls Soccer!   Don't we look like a bunch of  losers!

Unfortunately, this incident is not unique.  Reports of un-sportsman-like comments from the sidelines, attributed to parents, have come in for the other divisions as well.

What is going on?!  What kind of examples are you people setting for your children?  Wake Up!  This type of behavior is not going to be tolerated!  You are supposedly ADULTS!  ACT LIKE IT!

- First off, GBSL Rules CLEARLY REQUIRE that parents/spectators from opposing teams sit on OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE FIELD!  I will refresh your memories.

GBSL Rules, Section III - Field of Play, Item 18 - Sidelines: All games will have opposing teams’ coaches and spectators seated on opposite sides of the field. The home team will have the choice of sides, unless it is impossible due to the field position.  (In situations were opposite sides is impossible, opposing teams parents should sit together on one side of the Mid-Field line, and the other team's parents on the other side of the mid-field line, with as much room as possible separating them.  Preferably in this situation, the Coaches from the two teams should stand between the two sets of parents.)

- Secondly, GBSL Rules also address the issue of Harassment.

GBSL Rules, Section I - General, Item 8 -HARASSMENT:

Excessive verbal harassment of coaches, referees or player(s) by anyone including coaches, will result in the following:

A. One warning.

B. If harassment persists, parent and son, after initial warning will be asked to leave the game area and report to the commissioner prior to the next scheduled game.

C. If harassment continues after being asked to leave the area, the referee has the right to suspend the game. The Executive Committee will then decide the outcome of the game.

ANY PHYSICAL ABUSE OF COACHES, PLAYERS, OR REFEREES, BY A PLAYER, COACH OR SPECTATOR WILL RESULT IN THE FOLLOWING:

A. IMMEDIATE EJECTION FROM THE AREA.

B. A SUSPENSION OF THE PLAYER, COACH OR SPECTATOR’S CHILD FROM THE LEAGUE UNTIL THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE HEARS THE CASE AND MAKES A DECISION.

C. IF THE PARTICIPANTS FAIL TO LEAVE THE AREA, THE REFEREE HAS THE RIGHT TO SUSPEND THE GAME.

The Executive Committee will decide the outcome of the game.

Word of warning…  Any comment overheard by someone that takes offense at the comment, IS CONSIDERED EXCESSIVE!

The rules also cover the issue of smoking by parents/spectators:

GBSL Rules, Section I - General ,  Item 9 - ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AND SMOKING

Alcoholic beverages &/or smoking are not allowed on school and town grounds.

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT VIOLATIONS OF GBSL RULES BY YOU, CAN RESULT IN THE SUSPENSION OF YOUR CHILD FROM THE LEAGUE!

I am going to re-print the "Parent Responsibilities" Section of the "About  GBSL" Page of the website (http://www.greeceboyssoccer.org/AboutGBSL/philosophy.htm).  It summarizes quite well what is expected of parents beyond simply adhering to the rules.

Parent Responsibilities:

Parental participation is an important part of Greece Boys Soccer League's success. The following are examples of the types of participation that  all parents should be willing to commit to:

See that your child fulfils his responsibilities to the team.

Provide assistance in special events; share driving to and from practices and games.

Get your child to practices and games on time.

If your schedule allows, try to attend your child's practices.

Pick up your child after practices and games on time.

Make every effort to attend your child's games.   Encourage them with cheers and positive comments!

No negative comments from the sidelines!

Focus on the quality of the effort put forth during the game rather than the final score.  Remember, this is a learning league!

Provide assistance and coordination in bringing water, oranges, etc. to games, help and assist in the installation of nets for games.

Please don't coach from the sidelines.  Doing so undermines the teachings of the Coach, and serves only to distract the players.

Treat all officials with respect, and as guests of our League. Negative actions or remarks are inappropriate and encourage players to do the same. Teach by setting a good example!

Show respect for the coach of a team. Open criticism is in poor taste. Should a problem develop, adults are expected to find an appropriate time and place to advise the coach of their concern. The Greece Boys Soccer League provides many avenues of appeal, including coaches, commissioners, board members, and the Executive Board , by which any League player or parent can pursue an issue. Again, teach by setting a good example!

Always remember who this league is for... your kids!

Let’s  avoid potential conflicts.

Please take a moment and think before you speak.

How would you feel if you overheard someone "Trash Talking" about your son?

Now… What makes you think that they want to hear you "Trash Talking" about their son?

I remember hearing a phrase awhile back that went something like….

"Can't we just all get along"?

Yours in Soccer,
Bob Stehler,
Commissioner At Large, Greece Boys Soccer League
